SIIM Organizes and Hosts Inaugural Hackathon in Long Beach, California during 2014 Annual Meeting
Event convenes developers to tackle healthcare integration problems

Leesburg, VA – April 30, 2014 – From May 15-17, the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) will join forces with three SIIM corporate member sponsors, Agfa HealthCare, McKesson, and Vital Images, to bring together application developers and integrators to devise innovative solutions to healthcare interoperability challenges. Participants will use powerful new web technology tools with the goal of achieving productivity gains and cost savings for providers and patients.

As part of this new hands-on education program, SIIM is providing the platform to support workflow and process improvements across the healthcare enterprise with a set of cloud-based APIs highlighting the next generation of health IT standards, including the new REST-based DICOM and HL7 standards: WADO-RS, QIDO-RS, STOW-RS, HL7 FHIR, and SIIM’s SWIM. SIIM’s vendor partners will highlight new developments that use these new technologies during the Hackathon.

“Participating in the SIIM Hackathon allows us to collaborate with other industry vendors by embracing and leveraging healthcare standards with the goal of improving the outcome and operational efficiency of patient care,” said Scott Galbari, VP of Research & Development at Vital Images, Inc. “We are excited to join other industry leaders in this innovative event.”

“We, at McKesson, have always been strong supporters of standards based open solutions, but historically felt that the adoption of industry standards has been slow and has lagged behind the demands of our customers and healthcare providers. In today’s healthcare IT environment, we must speed the creation and adoption of emerging, standard-based initiatives that improve interoperability and workflow for the next generation of enterprise medical imaging solutions,” says Ashish Sant, VP, Engineering, Imaging & Workflow Solutions, McKesson. “The industry needs to participate in and support activities like the SIIM Hackathon. McKesson is proud to be part of this important educational initiative and to sponsor the ongoing SIIM efforts.”

Michael Green, President & CEO Americas Region, Agfa HealthCare stated: “To achieve excellence one must continually innovate. This axiom is a driving force within Agfa HealthCare and is a key reason why we are an active supporter of the SIIM 2014 Hackathon and its effort to advance standards based open solutions and workflow improvement across enterprise healthcare.”

The SIIM 2014 Hackathon will kick off at 9:30 am PDT on May 15 in the Long Beach Convention Center upon the conclusion of the Web Technologies – Healthcare IT Standard session. The Hackathon will continue to run until 3:15 pm PDT Saturday afternoon.

The Hackathon is free and open to all SIIM 2014 meeting attendees and exhibitor personnel. Come and learn and build. Register as a hacker at http://siim.org/hackathon.
